Always Open Google Search Results in a New Window

July 1, 2013 0 comments Article Easy, Web Browsing

I use search engines a lot – usually because I’m trying to find out how to do something.

Like any good researcher would, I’ll go to various sources before deciding which approach works best for me.

I tend to do a Google Search (other search engines are available, apparently ;o) ) and then open half a dozen or so of the most useful looking links, and then go through each – often returning to the Google page to open more links / revise my search terms.

Therefore, I find it helpful for search links to always open in a new tab, rather than opening in the same tab.

[CTRL]+Click has the same effect, but there is a way to set this at a user level (for Google searches only).

If you have a Google Account, it will remember this option for all devices you use. If you don’t have a Google account, it will apply only to that PC

Visit http://www.google.com (or your country specific variant), and ensure you’re signed in to your Google account (if you have one)

At the bottom of the search screen you should see ‘Settings’ – click it

A pop-up will then show some options. Select ‘Search Options’

There are a few options in here for you to play with – but the one we’re looking for is ‘Where Results Open’.

Tick the box below it to enable this option.

Then hit Save

That’s it – you’ll be sent back to the main search screen.

For me, this is a useful option. What would make it more useful is if it would always open in the background, rather than jumping to that tab, but it’s a start!
